According to Korean media TheElec, Samsung Electronics has begun developing a lidar sensor for autonomous driving.
The company aims to commercialize the technology in 2026, and Samsung aims to strengthen its auto business, the people said. In addition, Samsung recently introduced an image sensor for use in cars.
Lidar is an important part of autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems. It emits pulsed laser light and determines the position of the target object by calculating the time when the laser light returns to the receiver. The lidar system consists of a computing chip, pulsed laser and detector. .
The processor division of Samsung System LSI Corporation recently completed the development of the meta lidar chip, which will serve as the computational chip for lidar sensors. The chip, which collects refraction data of light and calculates distances, is an ultra-small chip made from a metamaterial that can control optical properties.
For pulsed lasers and detectors, Samsung is developing based on the time-of-flight (ToF) method.
A complete set of lidars is expected to be completed within the next five years, and Samsung aims to have a detection range of 100 meters for its lidar group. The lidar sensor will be an ultra-small module and not cylindrical.
IT Home has learned that lidar companies such as Velodyne and Luminar provide cylindrical lidars that scan 360 degrees. These lidars are attached to the center of the car’s roof like an antenna, which is considered unattractive in terms of design. The current price of lidar is also between 40 million won (about 224,800 yuan) to 100 million won (about 562,000 yuan), and this cost barrier is considered an obstacle to large-scale popularization.
Samsung’s approach is to attach multiple ultra-small lidar modules to the car, and the company aims to make the modules cost less than 50,000 won (about 281 yuan).
According to Yole Development, the automotive lidar market is expected to grow by an average of 113% annually from 2020 to 2026. The market is expected to be worth $1.7 billion in 2026.
